Les Fleurs du Mal

Les Fleurs du Mal has inspired visual artists to express the content of the poems in images, and important editions have included illustrations that complement the poetry of Baudelaire.

Les Fleurs du Mal by Charles Baudelaire is probably the most important book of modern French poetry. When first published in 1857 by Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, the book received hostile reviews from critics for the scandalous nature of the poems. The French Court censored and imposed a fine on the six "condemned poems," a decision overturned one hundred years later.
