Photographer, bookmaker, and installation artist Michael Peven has been active professionally since the 1970s. Peven, a professor in the art department at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, underwent open heart surgery in 2002. Described as a primer, Open--heart surgery is designed to take the reader through the surgery, from the first pages, which depict a healthy heart and hairy chest, through an injured chest bound by staples, to an angiogram and x-ray, sternum and lungs, into the heart and beyond. The book is bound on either side and the pages become increasingly difficult to turn until the viewer reaches the sternum, where a metal twist tie must be undone before proceeding to the final pages.
