Waste Incant is a statement about the policy of storing nuclear waste in plastics. Artist Susan Johanknecht superimposes polycarbonate and flexible vinyl over line illustrations drawn from a child's science textbook to suggest nature disrupted. Johanknecht omits parts of the drawings so that the organic images, viewed through the plastic lens, seem unsettlingly damaged. Poetic text form captions beneath the drawings, while the back of each page lists hazardous substances. Waste Incant is the sequel to Johanknect's 1986 Hermetic Waste, created in response to the Chernobyl disaster.
