While exploring ways to use translucent paper to create shadows, artist Helen Hiebert designed Alpha, Beta, an accordion book in a unique lantern structure. Each panel of the shadow lantern features an alphabet letter cutout that casts a shadow onto a second layer of paper. A flexible Japanese hinge allows the reader to set the book up in a variety of ways. The blurred shadows of the Arts and Craft style letters as seen from the back of each page suggest ghostly figures viewed from the present.
