This edition of Stephen Vincent Bénet’s (1898-1943) famous poem was a Book of the Month Club selection in 1980. Originally published in 1928 this book-length narrative poem about the Civil War won Bénet a Pulitzer Prize in 1929.
The book contains 11 wood engravings by Barry Moser that were printed at the Hampshire Typothetae under the supervision of the artist. In 1978 the Book of the Month Club in New York City announced a new series of books on the American past starting with John Brown's Body. A special arrangement between Pennyroyal Press and the Book of the Month Club was made to have the first 100 impressions from the blocks pulled on a special paper for its private distribution to patrons and friends. All were signed by Barry Moser.
