As the Soviet Union increased its sphere of influence, the United States increased its nuclear arsenal to defend against attack, both from that country and from Soviet allies in Latin America and East Asia. As the high cost of nuclear armament became clear, critics began to worry about the affordability of such a large weapons stockpile.
