Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children provided free treatment for children affected with polio. As the successful Salk vaccine consistently reduced the number of children with polio, the Shriners began focusing their funding on other issues such as clinical research and burn wards in the early 1960s. Cartoonist Tom Little won a Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for an earlier cartoon on this subject.
