In September 1960, millions of Americans watched the first televised debate of presidential candidates when Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy competed for American votes. The new medium caught Nixon off-guard and his sallow appearance and 5 o'clock shadow showed him in poor contrast to the fit and tan Kennedy. When he ran again in 1968, Nixon carefully controlled his television appearances and refused to debate on air.
