This cartoon urges readers to vote for Johnson to avoid nuclear war. It alludes to comments Barry Goldwater made during his unsuccessful campaign for president regarding the possible use of nuclear weapons in Vietnam. His opponent, Lyndon B. Johnson, ran an attack ad on the topic during a September 7, 1964 telecast of The NBC Monday Night Movie. Known as "Daisy", the ad showed a small girl picking the petals of a flower and counting along. Her counting became a countdown to a nuclear explosion. Although the ad ran only once, its powerful depiction reached a broad audience.
