The Appalachian Regional Commission was created in 1965 to alleviate poverty in the region by diversifying the economy and providing better health care and educational opportunities. It was one of the domestic programs that President Johnson fostered under the Great Society concept, which targeted racial injustice and poverty, among other social issues.
